Fuel
Fuel is supplied by Enemalta Corporation. They can be reached by telephone on 2124 4480. If you are unable to get through to them on the phone call Tower and they will contact them for you. Give them your aircraft registration, where it is parked (usually Park 1) and what fuel you require (Avgas 100LL or Jet A1) and a fuel bowser (tanker) will come over. Multi-service card, VISA card. Mastercard, Eurocard, Diners’ Club card or Quickcash card or cash in US Dollars or Euro is required for fuel uplifts unless the operator has already entered into a fuel supply agreement with Enemalta Corporation. Rate of exchange USD/EUR varies daily. For exchange rates go here: http://www.xe.com/ucc/ but be advised that Enemalta might use a slightly different rate.
Note: We have been advised that it is no longer possible to buy fuel duty free. All tax and duty has to be paid and then claimed back on presentation of proof of landing at a foreign airport. Expect to wait up to a year (or more) to get your refund due to inefficiencies inherent in the system.
Prices at 3rd January 2008
Avgas 100LL per USG (3.785 litres) USD 9.50 = USD 2.51 / litre
Jet A1 per USG (3.785 litres) USD 3.20 = USD 0.85 / litre
Aviation fuels are taxed as follows:
Duty on Avgas 100LL is EUR 0.5232 per litre
Duty on Jet A1 is EUR 0.3324 per litre
VAT @ 18% of the cost and duty (yes it is taxed and then taxed on the tax)
May 2008 - The above prices do not apply any more. The state monopoly for fuel supply in Malta, Enemalta, has run out of Avgas 100LL. This has been notamed to last till the 31 May 2008.
Monopolies by their very nature do not encourage efficiency or good service. Enemalta had installed a fuel pump and storage tanks for Avgas many years ago at considerable expense. However this facility has never been used. To refuel an aircraft, Enemalta sends out a fuel tanker with two persons and a separate vehicle with yet another person. This must be the only place in the world where it takes 4 people to fuel a small aircraft, 3 Enemalta employees and the aircraft pilot/handler. No wonder the price of Avgas keeps increasing.
Fuel pump complete with all accessories and 4 storage tanks installed at the northwestern end of Park 2. These 4 storage tanks can hold about 80,000 litres but it seems that they have not ever been commissioned!
Never used - reading 0000 Litres! Who is responsible for this gross inefficiency? Who pays? #!*%
Prices can and do change without prior notice but we will try to keep you updated, however we assume no responsibility for any variations from the above prices.
Lubricants are not available form the fuel company, however,
Aircraftcare can usually supply Total Aero DM SAE 15W 50 multigrade aviation oil.
